Amazon Comprehend Medical uses machine learning to pull important medical information from patient records.

This week Amazon made a move in the healthcare space to offer software that mines digitized patient medical records and clinical notes, and extracts important data. Called Amazon Comprehend Medical, the software uses machining learning models to extract specific medical information with the goal of helping physicians and hospitals enhance treatment and lower costs.

“Amazon Comprehend Medical is a natural language processing service that makes it easy to use machine learning to extract relevant medical information from unstructured text. Using Amazon Comprehend Medical, you can quickly and accurately gather information, such as medical condition, medication, dosage, strength, and frequency from a variety of sources like doctors’ notes, clinical trial reports, and patient health records.” – Amazon

According to the company, the HIPPA-eligible Amazon Comprehend Medical can identify protected health information and adheres to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) standards. It will be useful in helping with clinical decision support, revenue cycle management and clinical trial management, states Amazon.

“Whilst improving health outcomes, Amazon’s software could alleviate growing healthcare costs and insufficient resources brought about by aging populations and increasing prevalence of chronic diseases,” said Edit Kovalcsik, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases managing analyst for GlobalData in a company release. “Correct interpretation of the abundant data generated through healthcare services is fundamental to successfully transform the industry to become highly efficient and cost effective and Amazon is right at the edge to achieve this through its AI-integrated software, patient focused online pharmacy, and voice technology.”

The company already has customers and partners involved with Amazon Comprehend Medical listed on its website, including Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Roche Diagnostics, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte.

Amazon states that companies will only pay for what they use. A full description of the software offering is available on their website.
