Today’s operating rooms are congested, complex and inefficient. An operating room integration (ORI) system is one that streamlines or organizes all work procedures in operating rooms by integrating patient data, access to video and audio, surgical and room lights, medical equipment, and more, and manipulating them from a central command console by a single operator. This reduces congestion, streamlines data across various platforms, and eliminates the need for the surgical staff to navigate around the operating room to perform various tasks such as checking for patient information, controlling the lighting, displaying a video, and so on, leading to higher productivity, safety and efficiency while delivering patient care.

Currently, the demand for ORI systems is growing owing to the greater need for good quality of care, a surge in the number of surgical procedures, the growth in geriatric population, the greater preference by consumers for minimally invasive surgeries (MIS), and the growing concerns regarding patient safety in the operating room. As per a recent report on operating room integration system market, the industry is predicted to garner $4.2 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 11.2% from 2018 to 2025.

Many vendors in the ORI system space are coming up with new products to cater to the needs of customers globally. One of the recent developments is the launch of UniView system by Masimo, a global medical technology company. The product assists in simultaneous sharing of data and team coordination between clinicians, and is useful for any application where logically organized and timely data are needed for good clinical care. The Miami VA Healthcare System recently added LiveData PeriOp Planner to its PeriOp Manager workflow solution with the aim of improving and managing clinical workflows.

UniView by Masimo

Masimo’s recently introduced UniView system is an integrated platform of real-time data and alarms from multiple Masimo and third-party devices. It has been developed in keeping with the need for simultaneous viewing of data and its accessibility to every surgical staff from various medical devices in use in operating rooms (ORs), intensive care units (ICUs), and other areas. UniView consolidates data from different sources such as patient monitors, ventilators, anesthesia gas machines, and IV pumps as well as optimizes the presentation of parameters, trend data, and waveforms with certain screen layouts for various clinical cases. The four layout views of UniView include the Overview layout, the Hemodynamics layout, the Oxygenation layout, and the Sedation layout. The Overview layout lets clinicians view monitoring data from all connected point-of-care and therapeutic devices; the Hemodynamics layout helps in visualizing a patient’s status over time; the Oxygenation layout helps track a patient’s oxygenation status; and the Sedation layout helps monitor a patient’s sedation. The connected devices that relay visual alarm indicators assist clinicians in identifying patient distress and target areas of immediate attention.

The addition of LiveData PeriOp Planner to Miami VA Healthcare System’s LiveData PeriOp Manager workflow solution helps the medical center in streamlining clinical workflows and enhance veterans’ access to surgical care. A real-time workflow automation solution, the LiveData PeriOp Manager coordinates and organizes a patient’s care on his journey through surgery. Throughout the surgical procedure, the Manager helps surgical staff enhance communication, patient safety and operational efficiency. The web-based PeriOp Planner solution helps enhance workflow scheduling by coordinating the patient’s journey from consultation through surgery. It coordinates patients, resources and team communication in real time, guides patients through surgery preparation, schedules cases and avoids cancellations, and fosters high efficiency and block utilization. Dr. Seth A.
