Rick has more than 25 years of B2B publishing experience. Early in his career he worked on Food Processing and then Food Engineering magazines in a sales and then management role. He was the founder and a principal in Carpe Diem Communications where he developed and launched Food Quality magazine, The Food Quality Award and The Food Quality Conference & Expo as well as Pharmaceutical Formulation & Quality and Contamination Control magazines. Under his direction, Food Quality and Pharmaceutical Formulation & Quality received editorial excellence awards from The American Society of Business Publication Editors. In 2007, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. acquired Carpe Diem. Rick continues his entrepreneurial interests with the formation of Innovative Publishing Co. and the launch of MedTech Intelligence in 2009; Food Safety Tech in 2012 and the Cannabis Industry Journal in 2016. Innovative Publishing is also a conference producer of six med tech conferences, three food safety conferences and two cannabis industry conferences.
Maria Fontanazza, Editor-in-Chief
Maria has more than 15 years of experience in journalism, marketing, and communications. She was previously marketing communications manager and market research manager at Secant Medical, Inc., a manufacturer of biomedical textiles and advanced biomaterials. Maria also served as an editor at MD+DI and has authored articles that have appeared in domestic and international industry publications. She has a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communications with a concentration in New Media and Visual Design, and a Minor in Fine Arts, from St. Michael’s College in Colchester, VT. Tom Maeder, Conference Director
Before joining MedTech Intelligence, Tom served as Executive Director of the education arm of AdvaMed, the world’s largest trade association representing the medical device and diagnostics industries, where he created and ran workshops and conferences on regulatory, reimbursement, and other practical topics important to device, diagnostics, and combination product manufacturers. Prior to joining AdvaMed, Tom was Senior Advisor for Scientific Strategies at Georgetown University Medical Center, Senior Science Writer and Philadelphia Bureau Chief of Red Herring, a technology-oriented national business magazine, the Research and Creative Director for a graphic and industrial design firm specializing in medical products and services, and an independent marketing and educational consultant to pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device firms. He is the author of five books on topics including literary biography, law, psychiatry, and the history of the pharmaceutical industry, has co-authored seven humor books, written articles for magazines and newspapers including the Atlantic Monthly, Scientific American, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Tom has given lectures to academic, professional society, and popular audiences, and appeared on national and international radio and television, including Donahue and Fresh Air. He has done exhibition concept design and master plans for several U.S. science museums, and created the internationally traveling exhibit Salt of the Earth. Tom has a degree from Columbia University and did graduate work in developmental neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania.
Rich West, Publishing Director
Rich is a long-time B2B marketing and media industry executive with keen understanding of the relationships among content consumption, creativity, technology and successful sales & marketing strategy. At Innovative Publishing Company, Rich is responsible for all aspects of delivering the best customer experience among our various audiences engaged with MedTechIntelligence.com, content consumers, content contributors and marketers. Prior to joining IPC, Rich spent six years in Health IT media with leadership roles at Health Data Management (Arizent/SourceMedia) and FierceHealthcare (Questex Media). Prior to HIT, his background in medtech includes 3 years at Secant Medical where he led product development through business continuity project efforts mostly among cardiovascular and orthopaedic clients. Rich also worked with UBM Canon’s MD+DI and MPMN magazines plus the QMed Supplier Directory where he developed creative marketing solutions for medtech component and materials suppliers, contract manufacturers, and related medtech service organizations. Before medtech, Rich held sales, marketing and leadership roles in B2B publishing and media, including Group Publisher, Automotive Media for Primedia Business Magazines & Media. A graduate of the University of Central Florida with a BA in Journalism, Rich now lives in Pennsylvania’s southern Chester County countryside with his wife and two of three adult children eager to venture out on their own soon. RJ Palermo, Sales Director
RJ has more than 20 years of media, conference and agency experience. He was most recently a biopharmaceutical equipment contributor for the Pharma’s Almanac publication, and delivered several branding and research projects for pharmaceutical and medical device contract manufacturers. For 17 years RJ served as vice president of Interphex, the largest pharmaceutical manufacturing event in North America and was a key contributor of a successful launch of Medical Device Puerto Rico, which created the largest life sciences event in the Caribbean. RJ is an avid NY sports fan, and enjoys working out and spending time with his family and friends. RJ is married to his wife Beth, has a daughter Nora and dog Beau, and resides in Norwalk, CT.
